It is an amphoteric hydroxide which is insoluble in water and slightly alkaline. Non-toxic and tasteless, insoluble or slightly soluble in water, insoluble in alcohol, alkali and ammonium salt solutions. Easily soluble in mineral acids such as hydrochloric acid. It decomposes into zirconium dioxide and water at 500°C. Because of its amphoteric nature, it can react with acids and bases. When melted, it forms crystalline zirconate with strong base. The zirconium hydroxide obtained by the action of the aqueous solution of zirconium salt and the aqueous solution of caustic soda (or ammonia) is called α-type zirconic acid, which can be dissolved in dilute acid. The precipitated under heating is called β-type zirconic acid, which is hardly soluble in water and acid. There are three types: α zirconium hydroxide, β zirconium hydroxide and γ zirconium hydroxide. α zirconium hydroxide is represented by Zr4(OH)8(OH)8·nH2O; β zirconium hydroxide is represented by Zr4O2(OH)4(OH)8 ·NH2O means; γ zirconium hydroxide is expressed as Zr4O4(OH)8·nH2O; chemical activity α>β>γ.

Used in the manufacture of other zirconium compounds, pigments, dyes, glass, etc. It is mainly used for the preparation of zirconium and zirconium compounds, as well as fillers, catalysts, deodorants and pigments in plastics, rubber, ion exchange resin and other industries. Used as an analytical reagent, also used in the preparation of chromium compounds and the preparation of pigments; as an intermediate for other zirconium products.

Catalyst carrier. Amino acid and protein precipitation agent. Used as cod liver oil decolorizer, precipitation and isolation of amino acids (such as glutamic acid), etc.; used as white leather tanning agent to make the leather surface delicate, rich and elastic, and can be used as a lubricant, catalyst carrier, etc. is used for the retanning of chrome tanned leather. It can be used with sulfone bridge type synthetic tanning agent to replace tannin to tan shoe lining leather, furniture leather and bottom leather. The finished product has fine pores, plump and elasticity. And has good filling and wear resistance.
